A torsion spring holds real stored force, and on a door that's been running the same spring since the late 1980s, that force doesn't always release the way a winding chart says it should - rust, wear, and age change how it lets go. We don't recommend homeowners wind or unwind torsion springs themselves, full stop. Extension springs on older doors are a bit more forgiving to inspect, but replacing them still means working under a door that can drop. If you're comfortable popping the panel and taking photos of the spring stamp (the number printed on the spring) to send us, that helps us bring the right part on the first trip instead of guessing. Beyond that, the safe move is to leave the door down, unplug the opener so it doesn't keep fighting a broken spring, and call it in.
